Packing Guide

You will find these packing tips useful;

  • Wrap furniture legs with blankets, towels, or old linens.
  • If you need to take something apart, label, number, or otherwise mark each piece so when you need to put it back together you won't forget how.
  • If you have the instruction manual for assembling the item, pack it with that item.
  • You can use flag markers or masking tape on electrical cords and jacks to identify them. It doesn't hurt to draw a diagram if you don't have the owner's manual. Pack the diagram with the item.
  • When stacking chairs, stack seat to seat if possible and place plain paper in between the seats. Remember that newsprint will rub off on the chair's finish, so you should avoid it.
  • If you're using a moving company, it can pay to have them pack more fragile items. Mover's valuation doesn't cover damage to items you pack yourself unless the entire box is damaged. If you have any hesitation on wrapping a delicate item, consider letting your movers do it for you. This is a very important packing tip.
  • Pack your jewellery, family heirlooms, sports memorabilia, photo albums or other non-replaceable or especially valuable items yourself. Move them yourself too, if you can.
  • Try to pack all important documents in one place, like birth certificates, marriage licenses, etc. If possible, move these items with you. Don't put these items in self storage - they would be far better off in a safe deposit box. If you don't have a safe deposit box, contact your bank. Chances are the box rental will be considerably less than you expected.
