| Self Storage
General storage options for household goods are to either store your possessions in a moving company's warehouse, or rent a self storage unit at a self storage facility. Why you need storage will largely decide the type of storage you will use.
There are three basic types of self storage facilities available:
- 1st Rate Storage - may include security cameras, electrical security gates, secure locking systems, concrete storage units, and/or brick walls.
- 2nd Rate Storage - typically a combination of concrete and metal storage units surrounded by fencing. May or may not include security surveillance systems.
- 3rd Rate Storage - low cost, bare bones storage units. Usually little or no security features.
Insurance and Self Storage
Self storage space companies are responsible for insuring their own property, although some self storage facilities may offer limited insurance coverage or they may have agents that they're affiliated from whom you can purchase insurance for your stored property.
Homeowner's insurance policies only provide limited coverage when your property is stored off-premises.
The types of loss that are covered, the limits for special items, and other restrictions, limitations and exclusions vary from policy to policy.
Don't assume the property stored in your self-storage facility will be covered by your other insurance policies - at least not completely. Check with your agent or insurance broker and read your insurance policy to better understand how your property will be protected when it's in a self storage unit.
